Evidence Technician

The Beginning

Chief Robert Newell transformed the humble photography department into what is one of the most important positions in the Parkersburg Police Department today.

Evidence Technician Ross Clegg became highly trained in evidence recovery and preservation as well as advanced photography methods, ushering in the era of the Evidence Technician at the Parkersburg Police Department.  This position has become a major supporter of both the detective bureau and patrol division.  It is the undisputed busiest division in the department as well.

The Evidence Technician is responsible for response to crime scenes of all kinds that may have evidence needing processed, processing all photographs taken by patrol division and the detectives, processing taped statements, maintenance of several computer operations including the new digital fingerprint system, and taking fingerprints for civilians using our paid service.  This individual in this position must be able to effectively multi-task and stay on the cutting edge of police technology.

Crime Unit

An ambulance donated by St. Josephs Hospital was transformed into the departments first Crime Unit thanks to numerous citizen and business contributions.  Detective Greg Collins headed up the project that saw the community support the department once again when needed.

This unit contains state of the art evidence collection equipment and is also used by the Crisis Negotiators and S.W.A.T. Team as a command vehicle during major situations.  This vehicles interior was completely redone to suit the different divisions needs.  The exterior was given a makeover mainly to serve as a public relations tool.  The vehicle is also equipped with an exterior lighting package and generator that allow for outdoor crime scene processing at night.

The Evidence Technician and other officers do child identification events at local businesses and churches using the Crime Unit.  The Crime Unit can also be seen at local recruiting events and is proudly displayed at the Parkersburg Homecoming each year.

All the officers at the Parkersburg Police Department are truly grateful for anyone who donated to the Crime Unit project, it would not have been possible without them.
